Dear Ms. Woodard:
I received your message at my office. Thank you for contacting me.
We appreciate the opportunity to bring our concerns to Governor Owens.
Under funding and staffing shortages in the federal prison system are at
record levels. I have been with this agency for 19 years and I have
never witnessed budget shortfalls this bad. I realize our nation is
at war and sacrifices are necessary, but elected official and the public
should also be aware that the drain on our resources and political
tax cuts are not without consequences. The necessity of homeland security
includes government agencies and law enforcement personnel.
For the first time in the history of the Bureau of Prisons, reduction
in force (RIF) notices have been issued to staff. Our agency has also
been placed on the "commercial" list meaning jobs within the agency are on
sale to the lowest corporate bidder.
Our institution is in SW Jefferson county and the other Federal prisons
are located Florence Colorado. I am sure my colleagues at those facilities
would also be willing answer any questions you may have or provide more detailed
information.
I hope the Governor will request additional funding the Federal Bureau
of Prisons and put security on the front burner. I have attached
a packet of information which specifics in more detail what our agency is
dealing with. If the Governor could provide a response to this,
it would be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions,
please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Timothy D. Allport
